The Laugh of the Snow-White Goat — Part Two (Final)

Image
If you haven't read Part One yet, start there — this picks up on the very night the children vanished from their beds. Failed Trails By first light, half the village had gathered outside Abu Rashid's house. The men fanned out across the hills the way they always did when something went missing — reading the ground, checking for broken branches, looking for the print of a sandal or a bare foot pressed into the dirt. They found nothing. No footprints leading away from the window. No drag marks, no broken brush, no sign that three children and whatever had taken them had ever crossed that ground at all. A Waterskin With No Owner The woman picked it up and carried it home. Being an honest woman, she went door to door asking the villagers, "Has anyone lost a waterskin?" But the answer was always the same — nobody knew who it belonged to. Days passed and no one came to claim it, so she decided to keep it and add it to her household tools, and it became part of her daily routine of tending the sheep. Every morning she filled the waterskin with fresh water, tied it to the donkey's back, and set off with her flock toward the far edges of the wilderness. But something strange kept happening: no sooner had she left the village and gone deep into the open land ...
